A Well Nourished Root Structure

Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)
They who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.

Every true Christian life needs those daily silent times of waiting and listening to let the heart in holy hush commune with God. Ours is an age of work. The tendency is for action rather than worship. Before there can be a strong, vigorous healthy tree able to bear much fruit, to stand the storm and to endure the heat and cold, there must be a well planted and well nourished root structure. Before there can be a prosperous enduring Christian life, safe in temptation, full of good fruits, there must be a close walk with God in secret. We must listen at heaven's gate before we can go out to sing the heavenly songs in the ears of human weariness and sorrow. Devotion fits us for activity.

Jeremiah 17:7-8 (ESV)
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
     whose trust is the Lord.
He is like a tree planted by water,    that sends out its roots by the stream,
and does not fear when heat comes,
    for its leaves remain green,
and is not anxious in the year of drought,
    for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
